The Drifter

.

.

I am the captain of my boat

I navigate it well

The years have taught me how

When the wind was fierce

…the sails soared up

When the tide was wild

…the wheel was held on tight

…but alas

…there is no anchor

My boat has no anchor

It’s forever adrift

Time to anchor?

.

.

Once you have reached a season in your life where more than 30 birthday memories have been recorded, a birthday starts taking a new meaning onto itself. It no longer becomes a time for you to just giggle away over the sound of merry games, Kodak moments, cake indulging, gift shaking, and candles flickering away. Once you are over a certain age, the giggles remain but another ritual is added… for some reason it also becomes a time to evaluate–to evaluate those moments between each birthday.

.

On my last birthday, a friend took onto herself to evaluate my moments. Me, well, I was just still busy giggling the moments away, so she stepped in.

Her diagnosis of my life:

.

I have no anchor!!!

.

.

HER: If you were to die tomorrow, what would you say was your biggest accomplishment?

ME: [not wanting to go down that road] Can we not have this conversation on my birthday?

HER: You want to talk about the weather? Fine…it’s hot!!! There, we are done with that topic so what should we talk about now? Oh, I know…when are you gonna stop being a coward?

ME: [playing with the sugar packet on the desk] Hahaha, first time I hear you talk in a sarcastic tone…[all smiles]

HER: Listen, ‘Darya’, do not make the same mistake as I did…drop your anchor

.

.

Now since this was not the first time she had brought up this topic I knew where she was going with this, and to be honest with you my ears weren’t tuning in to her words. AND she knew this…she felt it…yet she kept on talking…more like she wanted her own ears to hear her words.

.

.

HER: I am 43 years old and have nothing to hold me down…never got married…never got truly attached to anyone…every time I got close I came up with a good excuse why it’s not in my best interest to anchor now…JUST LIKE YOU ARE DOING NOW

ME: Moi???!!!! Excuses??!!!

HER: [just raises her right eyebrow]

ME: They are not excuses. I just haven’t found the right port to anchor yet. Besides I love sailing freely from one port to another. No I don’t have the intention of sailing for ever but trust me, once I find the right port, I will anchor.

HER: There’s no perfect port. I mean you didn’t anchor at the last port, just because of one lousy day. Every single port would have beautiful days as well rainy ones.

ME: Yes, but IF I love the port, I would love the rainy days as well. Sweetie, I am not naïve, I know there’s no perfect port…but I also KNOW there’s a port somewhere just perfect for my boat. I’ll anchor once I find it. Ok, yes, there are days I get tired of sailing…or at least of sailing solo…yes there are days I think back to a port I had just left and think maybe I shouldn’t have been too hasty, maybe I should have explored it more…but the fact that I didn’t is a sign that my boat doesn’t belong to that port.

HER: That was my reasoning all my life. Stop kidding yourself. I know you too well Darya. You don’t even get close to the port before you turn around and leave. As soon as you begin to get close enough to make out a couple of the features of this port, you get scared and turn around.

ME: [silent]

HER: You get scared just like I got scared. Promise me something, promise me that you will turn around and go and explore your last port a bit more before you leave…at least for God’s sake drift around it for a month before you leave.

.

Well, that conversation took place on my birthday…since then I have turned my boat around…back to the port…the port I had just happily left…and yes, she was right…there are no stormy days here anymore…yes the port is a nice place…it’s flawless…it’s an ideal place to anchor…but my boat wants to leave…it feels like the beauty of this port doesn’t belong to it.

.

Now I am stuck…the port is perfect…it’s the port I’d envisioned in my dreams…I am stuck at this port…yet I can’t bring myself to drop the anchor.

.

How could the perfect port not be perfect for my boat?

.

Is something wrong with the captain?

.

Will she always be a drifter?

.

…and once again she sails away……

Trip to Malaysia: KL #1

Here’s a very belated travellog of my trip to Malaysia:

My flight from Dubai to Kuala Lumpur had an hour stop at Singapore airport. Though i only got to roam about this airport for 45 minutes, i officially declared it as my fav airport straight away. The whole airport looked like a hotel lobby…so quiet…so clean…so cozy :D…my first though was that if I’m ever forced to live in an airport for the rest of my life–you know like Tom Hanks in the Terminal (which FYI was loosely based on an Iranian dude who lived in Charles De Gaulle airport for 14 years)–I would pick to live in this airport:

So, I arrived at KL airport around 1 o’clock in the morning. I was told that i could get visa right at the airport, so as soon as I arrived my little observant eyes radared  around for the Visa Issue desk…couldn’t locate any…so I approach the first airport officer:

.

.

ME: xcuse me…where can i get a visa?

HER: over there

ME: no, that’s passport control…i still need to get a visa

HER: (all smiles, in the sweetest voice ever) yeah, same place

.

.

OK, that was my first encounter with a Malaysian and my first thought then was, boy they are so sweet, so friendly 😀

.

Well, the whole visa issuing and passport control process took about 25 seconds…

.

Now i had done my homework so I knew there are many different types of taxis I could get (even a rapid train) and that the best choice for me would be the budget taxi since I only had 1 suitcase and that ride to my hotel should be around 60 RM (about 5 KD or $20) ….and I KNEW I had to be wary of being swamped by non-airport taxis…but hey i was dead tired. I had left Kuwait at 3 in the morning and had arrived in KL at 12 midnight…that’s about 15 hours….so when the guy said the ride to my hotel would be 150 RM i didn’t haggle or turn him down…so as he was writing out the receipt, i just smiled and said:

.

.

ME: I read online that it’s suppose to be 60 RM

HIM: Don’t believe things you read online…they are outdated…

ME: Yeah but you are more than double charging me…i’ll pay..but i want you to know i know you are over charging me

HIM: ok, i know

.

.

…and here i bursted out laughing at my own idiosy :D…

.

but when i got to the taxi i saw it was the ones that online described as limos (they aren’t real limos)…the price for those was RM 120 and the site did mention that after mid-night they might charge more…so i wasn’t being over-charged after all 😀 😀

Enjoy these random pics of KL:

KFH in KL

View of KLCC from the Petrona Tower’s Sky Bridge

.

.

The Petronas Towers at night (these were the tallest towers in the world till 2004). There’s a rumor that the film Entrapment is banned in Malaysia coz of a super-imposed scene that show these Towers near the ‘slumps’ of the city of Malacca which is about 90km away from KL. Apparently the Malaysian government was upset. Now I’ll post pics of Malacca soon, I actually liked the ‘slump’ i thought it had soul and a past, it didn’t look anything like a ‘slump’ to me.

.

.

The KL Tower (aka Menara Tower). First thought, doesn’t Menara in Arabic mean Tower? So the name of this tower is Tower Tower??) Anyway, I recommend that whoever goes to KL, they should first go to the observation desk over here and check out the audio-visual tour guide of the whole city from up there. You can even see the Batu Caves from up there. Oh and when you go there definitely try the flying fox ride.

.

.

Me on the Flying Fox Ride at KL Tower (aka Menara Tower)

.

.

A notice board about a special tree at the base of the Tower. They spent RM 430,000 (about KD35,000 or $133,000 to save this single tree during the construction of the tower!!!

.

.

And here’s that special tree:

.

The ceiling of the dome inside the tower. The ceiling was designed by an Iranian from Isfahan.

Inside the tower

Another activity you can try at the KL Tower is to take a guided walk through the Bukit Nanas Forest. This forest is the oldest virgin forest in the world located within a city. What I really liked about KL is that it was a city in the middle of a rain forest. So if you live there and one day you need to take a short break from the fast pace of city life, you could just take a detoxifying walk in a rain forest. The plant species I saw over there looked like something out of Jurassic Park. Here’s a pic of the back of our guide and two other vistors. BTW, that couple were Indians who also lived in Kuwait for a while…how small is the world!!!

.

.

More pics soon 😀

UPDATE: Part 2 entry here: https://mymagicaldroplets.wordpress.com/2008/10/31/colors-of-malaysia-2008/

July 18th

So they all say this person is prone to be:

.

Sensitive ….but with a bit of a sharp tongue

Moodyand somehow tenacious

Lovingbut tend to give some people the cold shoulder

Loyal…and way too clinging

Compassionate yet also self-absorbed

.

.

Who were they describing?

.

Well, the Dalai Lama………as well as Julius Caesar, Albert Einstein, Salvador Dali, Vincent Van Gogh, Isaac Newton, Bill Cosby, Robin Williams, Harrison Ford, Tom Hanks, Tom Cruise, Princess Diana, Snow White ooh ooh and Bozo the Clown

.

…and of course moi.

.

….and why do we all share these same traits? Coz we all decided to crawl out into this world sometime between June 21st and July 22nd….yep we all are Cancerians 😀

.

.

Oooooh I forgot one other cancerian…one who crawled out specifically today…July the 18th…Nelson Mandela…him and I came out on the same day…ok with a few years difference…he popped out 90 years ago.and me…*cough, cough* years exactly today

.

.

UPDATE: I went to my last year’s post and clicked on the clink for “Your age on other wolds“…I turned 18 on Mars this year….hehehehe

My slanted perspective

I just read a comment on one of my flickr pictures that has got me wondering.

This is the pic:

This is the translation (comment was in Persian) of part of the comment:

… if you can just pay more attention to the framework (i.e. on some of your pics the object is cut off  unnecessarily, and in some pictures the image is not straight)

The part that really got me thinking was ‘in some pictures the image is not straight’. Arsh had also given me a similar advice on this pic:

So I went through my snapshots and realized that a LOT of them weren’t straight!!! WTH, how come I have never realized this before…..Hmmm, I wonder why? Do I really see the world slanted onto one side?

Here’s the output of the energy by brain burnt over this topic:

1. Maybe my camera is heavier on one side…yeah it’s not my perspective, it’s my camera

2. No, that can’t be it coz it’s not only my pics, even when I write I tend to slant down towards the end of my sentences

3. Heck, even when I stand I hardly ever stand straight, I always lean on one leg.

4. Maybe it’s coz my left brain is a lot heavier than my right brain so my head tends to sink to one side.

5. Or better yet, maybe it’s the earth’s magnetic pull…yeah maybe one side of my body has more iron so our good old earth has a stronger effect on it.

6. Oh hold on, I got it…maybe the world really is slanted to one side and I am the only one who has the supernatural ability to see the world as it really is.

The truth is finally out…we live in an unbalanced world…hehehehe

YES, I survived, I’m alive, I’m alive…Phew… NOPE, I didn’t die…well not yet anyway

Let me start off by saying I am an excellent driver…I really am…NONE and I mean NONE of my accidents were my fault (despite the police reports :D)…and NONE of any future accidents I’ll ever be in will be my fault 😀

So, I leave the house at an hour I don’t normally leave, I take a route I don’t normally take, I make a turn that I don’t normally have to make…I hear a loud screeching noise, I turn and out of my window i see a view very similar to this view:

Now just imagine that you see a pic of a a woman driver (with much better hair than this driver) and she is in a White Jeep Liberty approaching me very very very fast

OH BOY, THIS IS THE END…

OH BOY, THIS IS THE END…

OH BOY, THIS IS THE END

Well…since you are reading this so you probably know it wasn’t the end…but OH MY GOD…what a headache…I could have sworn after the clash my head flipped off my head and bounced off the window several times, then the roof and dashboard before clicking back on my neck.

OUCH WHAT A HEADACHE I HAVE NOW

[3 days later]

Now that my neurons had time to reconnect to my brain I have thunk out the following:

1. Why aren’t there any airbags on the side window…or better yet why aren’t car windows made of soft wobbly things so one would actually enjoy getting their head banged on…maybe something ticklish

2. Why can’t they make cars that detects when it is about to hit another car and then some kind of mechanism comes into play so it leap frogs over it. Aaahhh see if her car had leaped frogged over mine I would be sitting here grinning at the memory instead of going, ‘OUUUUUCCCCH MY HEAD, MOMMY DO SOMETHING” every 10 minutes.

3. So since the axiom goes: ‘Thou shall make a humongous life changing decision after a new death experience’ from now on I’m gonna drive a lot faster…seriously in both my accidents since coming to Kuwait my car was motionless…it’s other people that keep hitting me…so I saw the light…I’m enlightened… the message is that I gotta speed up!!

4. I’m gonna quit trying to lose weight…I mean if I were lighter I would have bounced around a lot more…guess that’s another advantage of being slightly over weight 😀

BTW, I would like to thank all those wonderful people who came to my aid right after the accident. I guess the care I sensed in the voice of these complete strangers spiritually helped to ease the pain. So thank you 😀
